The mayor of this tiny rural town requested a visit to engage in conversations not focused on negative issues but to determine the resources the town did have available to make significant progress without extensive funding. Conversations with local residents identified their aspirations for the town and what they believed could be accomplished. Community wide brainstorming sessions, meetings with young people, and other community engagement followed. The results have been astounding.
• A new young family purchased Akron Lumber and have completely remodeled it.
• Another resident bought a dilapidated farmhouse in town, restored and remodeled extensively and turned it into a lodge for rent.
• The campground added 15 new camping spots to accommodate guests from large cities, and a new restaurant moved in.
• Today, there are seven businesses serving food.
• There are plans for walking tours designed with assistance from youth groups.
• The school bond issue for a new pool was passed, and funds were raised by locals to cover all costs.
• The Care Center has broken ground for a new addition
